“Nusach”

In separate sanctuary rooms, for Rosh Hashanah our Synagogue hosts both Sefardi and Ashkanazi prayer gatherings. I prayed in Ashkanazi sanctuary. Between the pauses of the last set of shofar sounds, we heard shofar soundings coming from the Sefardi sanctuary.

The sounds of both shofars beautifully harmonized. In that moment, I realized that the sound of the shofar does not have a “nusach” (a unique style of prayer). Our deepest prayer does not have a “nusach” at all.

(In fact, it doesn’t even have words.)
